September is Suicide Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness on this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. During this month, we come together to shift public perception, spread hope, and share vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help. It is important to recognize that suicidal thoughts can impact anyoneregardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. While common, these thoughts should not be considered normal and often signal more serious underlying issues.
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 immediately. If you prefer not to talk on the phone, you can chat with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988lifeline.org. Additionally, you can text NAMI to 741-741 to connect with a free, trained crisis counselor through the Crisis Text Line. Familiarizing yourself with the warning signs and risk factors of suicide is crucial, and being prepared for a crisis can make a difference.
